About Meditation
Meditation is a way of communicating and obtaining awareness of the depths of one’s inner self. It has been practiced since the beginning of time and is part of the natural functioning system of being human. Just as it is natural to eat, sleep, run, jump etc, so meditation is also part of that human programming. Meditation nourishes the spirit and this is just as important for us as the air we breathe.
In the distant past meditation was thought of as being secret, thus it was a closed door, to all but a few. Those who used meditation could, in the main, be divided into two groups:
a) people, such as prophets or men of vision, encompassing “religious traditions”
b) outstanding individuals such as sages, saints and great poets.
Searching for the ultimate enlightenment, the deepest knowledge or mystical quest were some of the original reasons to meditate. Meditation does not, however, necessarily have to be used in the context of a spiritual practice.
Mediation has a transforming effect that can ultimately reach into every aspect of our lives. Modern science has now proved how this time of quiet reflection can benefit one’s physical body, both mentally and emotionally, therefore improving health and well being. This has changed the concept of meditation and it is now viewed as being a useful tool for everyone.
Today many health practitioners recommend daily meditation as a way of reducing stress and tension. Many work forces realize the importance of a calm and balanced mind and incorporate, into the company’s daily schedule, group meditation practices for there employees.
A stressed body system manifests itself in dis-ease, creating a variety of possible ailments.
The wide ranging effects of meditation have been validated by scientific research studies. Some of the benefits of meditating include relief from tiredness, reduction in cholesterol levels, reduction of blood pressure, a reduced risk of heart disease, relief from migraines or headaches, reduced anxiety and depression. Thinking becomes clearer and reactions sharper.
Meditation is available for anyone who is willing to try it. It isn’t difficult to do; it just requires practice. Gradually it will become a natural part of your daily routine.
